Even if you didn’t watch the Oscars last night, I’m sure by now you’ve heard highlights from the evening. To imagine so much talent in one room is BANANAS!
Out of all of the phenomenal talent in the room, one in particular stands out to me. It isn’t because of her newness, her look, or her dialect either. I wanted to share some of the lessons any of us can apply from the beautiful Lupita Nyong’o. It’s so important in our line of work, as Artists and Creatives to always discover new ways to be our best self.
Here are a few points that I have been reminded of by Ms. Lupita to help us do just that:
- Don’t be Afraid to Be The First Lupita is the 1st Kenyan to win an Oscar. I’m sure along the way it may have been challenging to pave the way- as it is for all leaders, but that didn’t stop her and neither should it you!
- Be Your Authentic Self This lady clearly has a beautiful heart and spirit. How horrible would it be for her to ‘fake it til’ she made it’ acting like someone else? We would all miss out of the refreshing ‘non-copycat’ feel of who she really is. Likewise, as an artist and owner of your business, ignoring your authentic self robs everyone else of the inspiration that you bring to the table- never back down from that.
- Believe In Yourself “No Matter Where You Come From, Your Dreams Are Valid’ This quote right here speaks so much life to me as is a great reminder of life’s limitless possibilities. There is nothing that is out of reach for us. It doesn’t matter if it’s never been done or if you don’t look and act like everyone else. In fact, that’s the perfect set up for something amazing to happen!
Here’s a clip of her acceptance speech at the Essence Magazine’s Black Women In Hollywood Luncheon:
Thank you Lupita for sharing your true self!
Cheers To Your Dreams And Living On Top!
