Over the years I have had my Creative counterparts ask this common question:
I always explain the importance of being strategically aligned with your ideal client and crafting a proposal is a part of that process. There is definitely an art to proposal writing as it can help you ‘close the deal’. I want to share with you my winning system of proposal writing that I have learned over the years. I know there are several ways of doing this but I have always gotten great results using these following steps.
- Do Your Research:The proposal creation process starts loooong before you sit down to write it. Where does it start you ask? For me, it starts as I strategically align myself to network with businesses and people who I desire to work with. So, in short, I’ve done my research and I know what they are about and have a pretty good idea of what their needs are. I create opportunities to work with them by meeting a need through my business. So you see, all of this starts in the researching and goal-setting phase.
- You Have Two Ears For A Reason:The second step of creating this proposal for my ideal client is during our initial meeting to HEAR from them about what some of their needs are as they very well may share others that never occurred to me. Always listen to what they are needing. Too often we talk about ourselves more than listening to what the client is saying. They will tell you, if you ask. This is what you shape your main proposal objective around. Once they understand that YOU offer what they need, it’s a beautiful situation. You can set up a meeting or a follow-up convo at that point. Create the names of the programs that fit what they need if you don’t have a program. If so, you can can tweek what you already have.
- Follow-Up: After your initial meeting, send a ‘Great-meeting-you-email‘ and attach your Electronic Press Kit so they can learn a more about you, your credentials and your offerings. When you have your follow-up meeting you share with them your remedy (which is your program). Once you get all of your questions answered (i.e. how frequency of training s, duration of trainings, budget, etc.) NOW you can create a proposal around that program title that suits their needs. This way you aren’t wasting time shooting in the dark hoping they will have the time, budget, and resources that your proposal is requiring without first having this convo with them.
These basic steps have helped me tremendously when working with new clients. It’s always a win because you know exactly what the needs are before investing personal resources into your presentation.
